» How we manufacture newsprint
Stage 1
PAPER COLLECTION
MNI's Recovered Paper Division collects paper all over Malaysia and brought on trucks to the mill for processing."

Stage 2
RECOVERED PAPER TO DE-INKED PULP
The recovered paper is first sent to a Pulping process, where it is mixed with water and chemicals to aid in re-sloshing, before being cleaned and screened to remove large contaminants. The pulp is then de-inked in specially-designed machines, before further cleaning, screening and brightening. Water is continually treated and recycled within the plant, to minimise total water consumption.

Stage 3
DE-INKED PULP TO NEWSPRINT IN JUMBO REELS
Water is then added to the de-inked pulp to produce slurry of 99% water and 1% fibre. This mixture is then pumped into the wet-end of the paper-making machine. MNI's paper machine, supplied by German manufacturer Voith-Silzer, is World class at almost 8 meters wide and running at speeds of more than 1500 meters per minute.

It then reduces the water content in the mixture by forming, pressing and drying to form a continuous paper web. The paper is smoothed by soft calendaring prior to being wound into large 25 tonnes jumbo rolls.

Stage 4
CUTTING AND WRAPPING
The jumbo rolls from the paper machine are then cut into various roll widths, depending on customer requirements, by two winders. Each roll is wrapped and labelled with a unique number for tracking purposes. Once customer rolls are ready they are dispatched by trucks to the publishers.

» Environment Protection

Our mill in Mentakab has invested over RM80 million in environmental protection equipment and has implemented some of the most stringent environmental processes in the world. This has made Malaysia an example to be emulated by other newsprint mills worldwide.
.

MNI is relentless in environmental vigilance! We conduct regular checks and monitor water-quality, boundary noise, ambient air, treated effluent discharge and other matters. For balance, we voluntarily submit to independent external environmental audits. We also organize training programs for staff, both in environmental procedures and in eco-friendly work habits. For our efforts SIRIM issued the ISO 14001 certification for environmental management to MNI in 2004.

MNI works closely with Government agencies to ensure the highest standards of environmental protection are maintained consistently. We welcome regular checks by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MOSTE), state departments and local governmental authorities. We submit regular reports and conduct familiarization programs for government officials and others in an effort to spread out environmental message!
